ARCHIVE FEATURES GERTRUDE FOUNDER, CCO, OTIS D. GIBSON
Global creative advertising publication Luerzer’s ARCHIVE Magazine is spotlighting GERTRUDE Founder, Chief Creative Officer Otis D. Gibson in its 2016 new year feature highlighting global industry creative leaders. Gibson’s feature follows other engagements with Luerzer’s ARCHIVE including judging their bi-annual 200 Best Digital Artists competition and GERTRUDE’s sponsorship of ARCHIVE’s 30th anniversary celebration at the Art Directors Club in NYC.
Otis leads the way at global innovation, brand development, advertising, and marketing services agency GERTRUDE, along with the agency’s design, innovation, and digital branding division OZ MFG. COMPANY, and newly launched experiential, branded architecture + environmental design division RAYE.
Born in Belize and raised in Manhattan and Brooklyn, Gibson has lived in many different areas of the world including Philadelphia, London, Paris, New York, and North Carolina before landing at Leo Burnett in Chicago. He has sat at the top of a plethora of well-known agencies across the world, but what he saw in the ad world didn’t satiate his palette for creativity. So instead of trying to find an agency that had what he was craving, he created it.
In the advertising world, a lot of agencies are defining themselves as interactive or traditional, but GERTRUDE, as Otis would say, is a “find the different way to do it agency.” This philosophy resonates throughout the agency culture. There is a truth in advertising that a simple idea can be appreciated by anyone no matter what language you speak, and Otis looks for people who are aware and push for this perspective. Although different in their own specific way, each employee at GERTRUDE shares one thing in common, an appetite for simple ideas and great work.
GERTRUDE represents everything Otis wanted in an agency; trustworthy, strong, and nurturing. Otis leads the way at GERTRUDE, drawing on over 25 years of creative leadership in all facets of advertising for some of the biggest, best, and most innovative companies worldwide including AB InBev, Adidas, American Express, Champion USA, Coca-Cola, DIAGEO, Google, HP, Kraft, McDonald’s, Microsoft, MTV Networks, Singha Beer, Toyota, and The U.S. Army. Otis holds an MBA from Steinbeis School of Management + Innovation at Steinbeis-Hochschule-Berlin. Today he sits on the Board of Directors for The Art Directors Club and serves as a member of the Ad Council.
With Gibson at the helm, GERTRUDE approaches the agency’s 11th birthday on Feb. 1 with excitement after a milestone year #10, in which the agency celebrated numerous highlights including relocation to a new global HQ office in Chicago for which Gibson led the design of the innovative “industrial mid-century modern” office space; launch of new Branded Architecture division RAYE; and the launch of three Innovation brands: 142-year-old I.W. HARPER Bourbon, new-to-world STUDEBAKER Expertly Crafted Whisky Cocktails, and Chicago-based craft brew, Around The Bend Beer. Co.
Keeping true to the agency’s mission “BUILDING STRONGER BRANDS FOR A BETTER TOMORROW,” GERTRUDE’s new website and brand films bring forward the agency’s core focus—showcasing iconic images of some of the world’s leading creative minds coinciding with shared philosophies that speak to GERTRUDE’s strong foundation in innovation. Among the famous faces, we see the likes of renowned creative innovators including Frank Lloyd Wright, Ray & Charles Eames, and George Harrison.
GERTRUDE starts its 2nd decade with leading expertise in the global brand innovation space, continued focus on delivering smart, forward thinking, expertly crafted ideas, and reinforcing the agency’s global creative leadership through strategic partnerships such as the Art Directors Club and Luerzer’s ARCHIVE. February 1st, 2016 also marks the 2nd birthday for GERTRUDE’s Design and Digital branding division, OZ MFG. COMPANY, and the exciting launch of GERTRUDE’s new Experiential + Branded Architecture division, RAYE.
